I’ve already written about Portal 2 and the build-up to this formal announcement, but there’s one thing I didn’t know then: Portal 2 has co-op. Besides that, I’m considering the creative marketing campaign as the PC version announcement; this press release and Game Informer cover are for Xbox 360 players.

Hopes fulfilled.

They also did this. I’m less interested in what’s happening now, though, than I am in what’s happening in a year or two when West and Zampella have a new game.

This is several weeks old, but I’ve only just seen it this week. And it’s relevant again. It’s educational and entertaining, even though it’s from the Xbox 360 perspective.

Last time I heard from Shank it was being shown as an Xbox Live Arcade game. Now, fresh from the Penny Arcade Expo, GameTrailers has an extended gameplay video that they’ve filed under the “PC” category. This is great news, if it’s not an error, as the game looks wonderful.

At last, a zombie game that isn’t a first-person or twin-stick shooter, but a sim/RPG — and from a reputable developer, no less. By the look of those screenshots, the zombies may even be shambling.

It’s refreshing to see a someone in the press willing to play and cover the PC version of a multiplatform game. It’s not even a staggered release, which is usually the only time we hear about a PC version from anyone other than PC-centric outlets.

Although I’m wary of putting stock in non-announcements, I want to believe that publishers are coming back around to treating this platform right.

By now I hope you’ve noticed common theme in the items I’ve picked this week: the PC is getting its just deserts. News like this is so plentiful lately that it’s on the verge of becoming non-news; I’m okay with that.

Another Todd Hollenshead interview. This time he’s talking about businessy stuff; the size, success and direction of the company and their projects. He sounds happy with how their mobile games are performing. Why do I care? Well, while I don’t have a phone to game on, I am still holding onto hope for an Orcs and Elves sequel that would eventually make its way to DS!

The next game from Klei Entertainment, developer of Eets for PC and XBLA. Though early in development, Shank is only being shown for the Xbox 360 here. The video has me hooked, my fingers are crossed for a PC version.

I’ve heard this game described as “Lemmings meets The Incredible Machine”. Maybe I’m a horrible person for it, but I’ve never played either of those games. But I get the idea. It’s an idea that I like, and I’m glad that the people at Klei came up with it.

Eets is simple fun, but can be incredibly complex, if you let it. The objective of the game is for Eets to safely get from the beginning of the level to the shiny orange puzzle piece at the end. How you accomplish this is not always readily apparent, and in most cases, the solution is open to interpretation.

Each puzzle starts out paused. You’re left to survey the layout, see what kind of items are before you, observe what Eets’ default emotional state is, and also make note of what’s in your inventory. Eets will behave differently in certain situations depending on his mood. For example, if he’s sad/scared, he’ll be wary of ledges and will turn around when he gets to them rather than jumping off. If he is happy/content, he will jump when he arrives at a ledge. If Eets is angry, he will stomp his way around very quickly and when he arrives at a ledge, he will launch himself off of it much further than he would if he were in a better mood. Keeping track of and manipulating Eets’ mood with the tools provided to you are just the beginning of what you’ll need to do in order to guide him safely through the myriad of puzzles that this game has to offer.

If those are not enough, Eets also comes with its own level editor. You can share these with others via the community site as well as download levels that others have made, so your enjoyment of this game doesn’t have to end when the stock puzzles are solved.

Eets is available from both the game’s official website as well as through Steam for $9.95. Custom levels are available to you either way. If you’re interested in the XBOX Live Arcade version of the game (which features entirely different puzzles), it’s roughly the same price; 800 Microsoft points. There are also several puzzle packs available for purchase on the Marketplace.
