I played the original Mass Effect on Xbox 360 in 2007 as a male Infiltrator who followed the Paragon path. This was characteristic of me because I rarely play females and almost always play “good” characters. I think the only time I’ve defected to the dark side was on my third time playing of Knights of The Old Republic. But for the next two years I’d hear praise for female Shepard’s voice performance, and arguments in favor of the Renegade path.

I resolved that, when I played Mass Effect on PC, I would play as female Shepard, and I’d also play as a Renegade. So I created Sarah Shepard; I expected playing her to be fun, but not superior fun. I also expected to hate her. I didn’t like myself as a Dark Jedi in KoTOR. Force Lightning was fun, but I was a selfish asshole. I didn’t save the galaxy, I took it. My choices on Mass Effect’s Renegade path didn’t all result in such extremes, though; I could save the galaxy without having to mollycoddle everyone. I’d do it efficiently, and by my own rules. Playing Paragon or Renegade is analogous to playing as Superman or Batman would — that is, if either approved of killing.

I began Mass Effect 2 the day it released, mere weeks after completing my second run through Mass Effect. I found that Sarah Shepard had changed, and so had Mass Effect. But my Shepard was still a hard-ass who demanded respect, and who had a galaxy to save. I proceeded to oblige, this time with a new ship, new team, and most importantly, no inventory. The very facet of Mass Effect that most bothered me hadn’t just been changed, it had been discarded. Direct sequels usually just bring about new gimmicks, not fundamental design changes. The Mako was removed, and with it, so was planet exploration, which abetted making each assignment unique and meaningful, when before they were generic and menial. The Mako’s absence also changed the way we gather resources. Now we gather them as any sensible future person would — with probes, from the comfort of orbit. These refinements, additions, and omissions coalesced to form the best sequel I’ve played since Half-Life 2. It’s going to be very hard for there to be a better game this year.

Almost as soon as I finished playing like Batman in Mass Effect 2, I moved to playing as Batman in Batman: Arkham Asylum. Everyone was right: that game is good. It was all I could think about for a few days. I finished with just under 15 hours played and all Riddler challenges complete. Partway through playing, I began considering that I may not enjoy the game as much if I weren’t playing as Batman. I decided that I wouldn’t have. I also decided that I can’t count that against the game. I don’t think I’d have enjoyed Mass Effect 2 as much, either, if it had been built around lesser fiction. Arkham Asylum played well enough to make me feel like as though I was Batman, the baddest ass mortal in American fiction — that’s no small feat.

Neither is following those two games with a third — nothing I have in my game queue can compare. While coming down from this video game high, I’ve been dabbling. The Bad Company 2 Beta has been fun, though it keeps making old man jokes about my computer. And despite an epileptic episode, I’ve played a lot of Lumines. I’ve tried to get into a Total War game again (Medieval II), but I think I play those games incorrectly. I also started Yakuza for Playstation 2; that game has style. Still, I feel as though I’m just killing time until Final Fantasy 13 releases in a few weeks. I’ve never bounced between games this much.

Maybe I’ll make a male Paragon.

Good or not, 3D Sonic has never made sense to me, so I haven’t played a new Sonic game since Sonic & Knuckles. I’m ready for this new game to be good; I love 2.5D. I only wish Sega had mentioned a PC version in their announcement.

I’ve just finished Mass Effect 2 after 36 hours of play spread across seven days. At some point during that, I decided to take screenshots. Not for any specific purpose; I didn’t intend to create a narrative or a photojournal, I only wanted to capture the cool moments I was seeing. Using Fraps and numpad forward slash, I had taken almost 3,000 screenshots when the credits rolled. After sorting — viewing, deleting, saving, converting — I have just over 300 moments to share. This is the first time I’ve taken so many screenshots of a game, and the process was surprisingly noninvasive. I just pressed the capture key whenever I liked something that was happening. You could say I used Fraps to applaud.

I found this amusing at first, but Joystiq had a follow-up interview with Greg Zeschuk who revealed not all DLC will be restricted to the Cerberus Network. Anything that’s non-free will be sold through the Xbox Marketplace. For a moment I thought someone had finally taken a serious stab at GameStop, but it now seems to be a minor poke at best.

Also, Joystiq missed a headline opportunity: Cerberus Network’s Bark Worse Than Its Bite.

Paradox to publish fantasy action-RPG parody Magicka

Not only is the game’s premise appealing, but it looks as though spells are cast using mouse gestures, as in Black & White.

It really does look rough. See as Ryan Davis struggles with the controls in Giant Bomb’s Quick Look:

This is a gallery containing issue #1 of the Dante’s Inferno comic book. It helped me realize that my interest in the Dante’s Inferno may not extend past its marketing campaign.

At last; there’s been too much not-Sam-&-Max coming from Tell-Tale for my tastes. I only hope they’ll distribute this new season through GameTap as they did the previous seasons.

Jolicloud is a Linux distribution that is tailored for netbooks. The project’s leader is Tariq Krim, co-founder of Netvibes. If you’re interested in Google’s ChromeOS, give Jolicloud a look; it serves a similar purpose, and it’s available now.

Bill Harris writes about why he loves King’s Bounty: The Legend. I’ve been playing it over the last few months, and I love it as well. I’ve had some technical issues just as Bill did, but nothing that couldn’t be dealt with. Check out his article for a bit about why King’s Bounty is a great game.

Microsoft Announces Games On Demand For Windows

For now, I’m in favor of this. Although Microsoft’s efforts with the Games For Windows Live software have done little but bring the Xbox experience to PC gamers, so have Valve’s efforts with Steamworks and Modern Warfare 2. And if anyone’s capable of muscling some marketshare away from Steam, it’s Microsoft.

<a href=http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/26292/Direct2Drive_Recent_Digital_Distribution_Market_Estimates_Misinformation_At_Best.php">Direct2Drive: Recent Digital Distribution Market Estimates ‘Misinformation At Best’

I was skeptical of Stardock’s claims as well. It makes sense to me that, based on seniority alone, Direct 2 Drive’s marketshare would be larger than Impulse’s. But is Impulse’s share really so small that it doesn’t even chart?

Quake III Is All Growed Up

Happy 10th Birthday to my second favorite game of all time.

Report: CTF Pioneer Threewave Software Lays Off, Reorganizes

This story originally reported that Threewave was to shut down, and I’m glad to see that’s not the case. I have no affinity for their recent games, but I was an avid Threewave CTF player in Quake 3. I would hate to see them simply run out of work.

Star Wars: The Old Republic getting two novel tie-ins

I’ve read four novels based on BioWare games and haven’t been disappointed yet, but I may skip these. Maybe. Okay, probably not.

Medal of Honor Reboots In Modern Day Afghanistan

I’ve never played a Medal of Honor game, but bully to EA for the timing of this announcement.

Full Circle: Bitmob Joins New EGM

And Area 5, too. I hope this relaunch works out; I’ve gotten nothing but bad vibes from the idea of it until now.

To clarify, these same bans (in addition to server-specific bans) could have still happened with dedicated servers.

There’s nothing remarkable about this post except that the headline is ridiculous. What I’ve felt over the last several weeks, however, is something different. It’s a sustained state of contentment — something that I can account for. It’s a feeling of fullness, and it’s because of video games.

I am full because of Brutal Legend. This game was almost perfect, from its story, its humor, and Jack Black’s performance, to its RTS and driving systems, and even its side missions — but I did say almost. The rate at which new Solos unlocked disappointed me; I think it was poor design to have four at the beginning, four at the end, but none in the middle. Still, I loved this game. I bought it on release day, and I finished all the missions by the end of the next. I never do that.

I am full because of Defense Grid: The Awakening. Tower Defense is a genre that gets a lot of flack — and it’s true, there are a lot of bad games out there — but if there’s a game that the skeptics should play, it’s Defense Grid. Its difficulty curve is fair, and its challenge modes suit it for repeat play. It even has character, an uncharacteristic attribute for a Tower Defense game that isn’t based on a license.

I am full because of Osmos. Although my affair with Osmos was a troubled one, it started strong. I loved the Ambient levels as well as most of the Sentient levels, but the Force levels were a source of frustration. Eventually, this brick wall of content bested me. Still, Osmos afforded me several hours of chilled-out bliss before I began cursing its name and dumping its clothes out the window.

I am full because of League of Legends. I played Eul’s version of Defense of the Ancients regularly during its infancy, and I continued playing through DotA All Stars, but I stopped shortly after Icefrog took over the project from Guinsoo. Now an entire genre has spawned from DotA, and I would be a fool to ignore it. In spite of being an old school DotA player, I’ve tried to come to League of Legends with minimal expectations — it has exceeded these. For having over 40 heroes and a persistent skill system, the game is balanced and competitive. Matchmaking can be annoying when queuing as an arranged team, but this can be abated simply by being a better team.

I am full because of Torchlight. It’s an Action RPG whose small innovations help it to shine in a genre plagued by rote derivations. Its ingenious feature contributions include automatically picking up gold by running over it, fishing, and toggling the display of names of items on the ground — these amaze me. They make Torchlight a joy.

Finally, I am full because of Dragon Age: Origins. I’ve not been occupied solely by the video game, but also by the second prequel novel, Dragon Age: The Calling. The Calling’s story begins fourteen years after the epilogue of The Stolen Throne, and it introduces us to the Grey Wardens as King Maric guides a group of them through the Deep Roads. As The Calling tells us of the Grey Wardens and their function, the social standing of mages and elves, and the nature of the Fade and of the darkspawn, it’s more of a direct primer for the video game than its predecessor. At least, I think it is.

As of writing this, I’ve played about four hours of Dragon Age: Origins. I’ve completed the Human Noble Origin as a Rogue Archer, and I’ve explored some of the Korcari Wilds on my quest to begin The Joining. This is not far into the game, but I’m already relating it to what I’ve read in the books. I know why Cailan is the way he is; I know Duncan’s history; I know what The Joining entails, and what it means for those who take it; most of all, I know what kind of man Teyrn Loghain is. But I’ve thought to myself, are these insights spoiling the game for me? If I had been given them out of context by some third party, I would say yes, but these are from books — books written by the same author who wrote the video game’s story. No, I think these insights are enriching my experience. They’re giving it deeper meaning — crediting this, I am full.
